Will Os Join Nats With 100 Losses?

Some might say the Washington Nationals are a tough act to follow. After all, the team has lost more than 100 games this season, but by the end of the week, the Baltimore Orioles may join them.

Unless the Os split their last six games, they too will lose 100 games this season. Losing 100 games is hard to do in baseball, but having two teams in close proximity do it is hitting rarefied air.

It has happened only four other times over the past 100 years in baseball, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The last time was in 1954. That year, the then Philadelphia Athletics of the American League chalked up 100 losses and so did their National League counterpart, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

While there is some distance between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, no other 100-game-losing tandem had been that close since 1940, when you will find big time losers in the same city. That year, the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League went 54-100, while the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League struggled even more with a record of 50-103. These same two Philly teams also shared 100 loss seasons in 1936 and again in 1921.

For Nats and Os fans, it’s been a long, hard and bumpy ride along I-95 this year. But take some solace: Losing does end eventually -- the Phillies won the World Series last year.
