1500-Meter Gold Medalist Matt Centrowitz Eyes Two More Olympics

Hometown track hero and Olympic gold medal winner Matt Centrowitz said he is planning on competing in two more Olympics.

The Beltsville, Maryland, native spoke at a news conference held by the National Press Foundation in Washington, D.C., Monday morning.

Centrowitz said he plans on racing at Tokyo in 2020 and in the summer games in 2024. The son of Matt Centrowitz Sr., two-time Olympian and current head coach at American University, also said he was thinking about looking into other races as well.

"As we know, a lot can happen between now and then, but, certainly looking far ahead, I'm going to start running a little more 5Ks to leave the option of possibly running the five at Tokyo," he said.

Centrowitz won the gold medal in the men's 1,500 meters at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, an event Team USA hadn't won in more than a century. He made his Olympic debut in 2012 in London, where he finished fourth in the 1,500 meters.

"Being the reigning champ, there will be more expectations, a lot more talk. That's what comes with the territory and that's what you want," Centrowitz said. "And I'm definitely looking forward to that."
