A beloved tree on Howard University's campus was uprooted overnight Wednesday as storms ripped through the area.
After decades, the tree crashed onto a university green, leaving its roots exposed and debris in the area.
The base of the tree was painted blue and white by members of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority. Several Greek organizations at Howard paint the bark of trees on the University Yard. Zeta Phi Beta was founded at Howard in 1920.
The storm caused serious damage around the D.C. area, taking down trees, delaying trains and even toppling the canopy of a gas station.
