Woman Found Dead Off Maryland Trail Identified as 20-Year-Old Hyattsville Resident

The woman found dead by a jogger on New Year's morning has been identified as a 20-year-old Hyattsville resident.

The body of Catherine Alvarado was found about 7:20 a.m. Friday off the Northwest Branch Trail, near Rosa L. Parks Elementary School, in Chillum, Maryland, Prince George's County police said.

Alvarado had trauma to the upper body.

A death investigation is underway. Detectives don't believe this was a random act, police said Saturday.

Police took more than a day to identify the victim.

"There appears that there's a good chance it's going to be a homicide. There's no ID on her body or anything of that nature, so we have to try to determine who she is," Acting Division Chief Stanley Johnson had said Friday.

Investigators from the Maryland-National Capital Park Police secured the trail as they looked for evidence all day Friday, leaving at nightfall.

This section of the trail, in addition to being a recreation area, serves as a cut-through for locals heading from their homes to shops along East-West Highway.

Police would like to speak with anyone who was on the trail late Thursday or early Friday.

The body of an 18-year-old man, Denis Vitalino Montufar-Bautista, was found Dec. 22 along the same trail, in Silver Spring. A 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old were were charged in his death.
