Woman Forces Taxi Driver to Withdraw Cash at Knifepoint

A woman robbed a taxi driver at knifepoint in Silver Spring Thursday evening, Montgomery County police said.

The woman approached a Barwood cab in front of the Baja Fresh restaurant at 8515 Fenton Street shortly about 6:20 p.m. and asked to be taken to a Starbucks. While en route, she asked to be taken to the Capital One Bank at 8676 Georgia Avenue. When they arrived, the woman displayed what was described as a 12-inch knife and demanded the driver’s money and credit cards, police said.

The driver complied, and the woman asked for his PIN, police said. At an ATM with the driver, the woman put his card in and entered a dollar amount and the driver pressed cancel. She entered a lower amount and it was canceled again. Once again she entered a lower amount and the driver allowed the transaction to continue, police said.

The woman fled on foot toward the Silver Spring Metro Station.

Anyone who recognizes the woman in the surveillance image or who has information about the crime should call police at 240-773-5100 or Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS (8477).
