Residents in Northern Virginia are learning the disturbing news that the West Nile Virus has been found in local mosquitoes. In a panic, many residents are scrambling to take measures to protect themselves from the deadly disease. West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne zoonotic arbovirus belonging to the genus Flavivirus in the family Flaviviridae. This flavivirus is found in temperate and tropical regions of the world. Symptoms of the virus include: fever, headache, body aches, pain in eyes, skin rash and swollen glands. While the symptoms can be deadly, many of those who come in contact with the disease will never even know they were infected in the first place. Whether or not the disease is dangerous is irrelevant; when it comes to something like West Nile, prevention is the best medicine. So, how can you protect your family from West Nile Virus? Below are some tips that will help you and your family stay safe.

Avoid Mosquito Bites
Prevention is always the best medicine. Make sure to use repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and lemon juice extracts. Repellents with these contents provide long lasting protection against mosquito bites. To get the most out of whichever repellent you choose, be sure to follow the instructions on the label.

Although it may seem impossible considering the weather, wearing more clothing is another way to prevent mosquito bites. However, if you are planning on being in an area that has a high concentration of mosquitoes, long sleeves and pants is the way to go.

Avoid Peak Biting Hours
Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and at dusk. When possible, avoid outdoor activities during these hours.

Protect Your Home
One surefire way to attract mosquitoes to your home is with pools of standing water. Make sure to empty any buckets, pet water dishes and any other standing water on your property.

If you enjoy a nice breeze in the evening, be sure that your windows have properly installed screens. The best way to keep mosquitoes out of your home is to use your home’s A/C  as frequently as possible.

Work With Your Community
Most towns and cities have mosquito control programs that use methods ranging from spray trucks to applications of insecticide where they breed. One way you can help your local mosquito control is by reporting dead birds. Dead birds can indicate that the disease is being transmitted between the two. Reporting dead birds can help your local mosquito control program track and eradicate mosquito populations.

Following these simple tips will help you and your family avoid the West Nile Virus. If you think you are experiencing symptoms of the virus, contact your doctor immediately.
