Va. Tech Board OKs Budget, Tuition Increases

Virginia Tech's Board of Visitors has approved a $1.14 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

The board on Monday formally ratified a 9.6 percent increase in tuition and mandatory fees for in-state undergraduates to $10,509 for the 2011-12 school year, The Roanoke Times reported. Out-of-state undergraduates will see their tuition and fees rise by 5.4 percent to $24,480.

Room and board for all undergraduates will rise by 9 percent to $6,856 for 2011-12. A typical in-state undergraduate would see total costs increase by $1,486, or 9.4 percent, for the year.

Virginia Tech also will provide a 1 percent increase in graduate assistant stipends along with a $200 supplement for 2011-12 to help offset increased costs and university fees.

The board also approved a new Bachelor of Science degree program in meteorology.
