Virginia Strip Laws Challenged

Some nightclub owners in Virginia want the courts to peel back the layers of strip laws in the commonwealth and take another peek.

They’ve filed a lawsuit challenging laws that prohibit stripping and topless dancing at clubs that serve mixed drinks.

A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard the arguments in Richmond Thursday.  It could take several weeks for the panel to make a decision.

The suit was filed by three Papermoon nightclubs. There are two locations in Richmond and one in Springfield.

The club owners claim it makes no sense to allow striptease performances in establishments that serve only beer and wine, but prohibit them in clubs licensed to sell hard liquor.

A lower court ruled the laws are constitutional.

The clubs are appealing that decision.
