Two Tornadoes Confirmed in Southern Maryland

Two tornadoes touched down in southern Maryland Saturday evening during wild weather that also left flooding in its wake, the National Weather Service confirmed.

The two EF-1 tornadoes, with peak winds of 90 miles per hour, were briefly on the ground at the same time as the "first was nearing its end, and the second was just getting started," the Weather Service said in a statement.

The tornadoes ripped up trees and damaged siding and shingles on homes. Falling trees flattened several barns and outbuildings, the Weather Service said.

The first tornado touched down in southern Charles County near Morgantown. It was on the ground from 4:28 p.m. until 4:36 p.m. for about 2.1 miles, the Weather Service said.

The second tornado was on the ground for more than a half-hour, from 4:32 p.m. until 5:07 p.m., and scraped a path of more than 16 miles, nearly crossing the width of St. Mary's County.

No one was injured in the tornadoes, though at least three people were killed in flooding in Maryland. One person is believed dead after a raft went over the Lake Linganore dam.

And a mother and her four-year-old daughter were electrocuted Saturday when their basement flooded. Police are investigating whether a portable sump pump near the basement electrified the water.
