Freight Train Overturns, Spills Stone

A freight train derailed in Delaware Sunday morning, destroying the tracks and spilling its load of stones.

Delaware State Police said the Norfolk Southern train was traveling southbound near Millsboro, Delaware when 15 of its 70 cars jumped off the track and spilled stone. The two locomotives pulling the train were also derailed, but remained upright.

Police said approximately ¾ mile of track was destroyed or heavily damaged in the incident.

The train conductor and engineer onboard were not injured. The tracks run parallel with U.S. Route 113 between West State Street and Patriots Way.

Police said there are no hazardous conditions, or threats to the environment or surrounding communities.
