Safeway Store Open — With No Employees in Sight

Shoppers still reportedly paid anyway

It was an odd sight in Tenleytown Wednesday: an open grocery store, but no employees to man it.

That didn't stop shoppers who needed items in the middle of a blizzard. They resorted to the honor system at the checkout counter, according to the Washington Post, and left money for the goods they purchased.

Shopper Frank Swain said he drove to the Tenleytown neighborhood store in search of milk. He found the parking lot plowed and the lights on but no one working.

"The lot had been plowed, the lights were on, the PA system was operating, but there was no one working there," Swain told the Post. "It felt like a movie set."

Police came upon the scene Wednesday afternoon and closed the store, saying someone probably left the store open by mistake.

Safeway spokesman Craig Muckle said security staff found the store secured at 2 p.m. He denies anything was taken or money left behind.
