NoVa Noise Mystery Solved

Marines to blast it out all week

Residents of Fairfax and Loudoun counties are reporting a series of loud booms, bangs and even some explosions.

One NBCWashington tipster in Fairfax said her pots and pans were rattling and she felt like she was in the movie “Jurassic Park.”

For once, it’s not the Wilson Bridge or Mixing Bowl projects making all the noise. It’s the military. The Marine Corps Base at Quantico scheduled munitions training through the week. The training began Monday and is scheduled to last through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Marines put out a Noise Advisory last week to inform the public. The news release also explains why the rumblings may be especially noticeable today: “Please Note: Effects of training vary depending on weather conditions. Overcast conditions may increase noise and vibrations.”

That certainly seems to be the case.
