More Than 300 DCPS Jobs To Be Cut

Teachers have until August to find new positions

The D.C. public school system will be eliminating more than 300 jobs. Teachers were notified that they have until August to find other positions in the school system.

The notices were issued to 333 teachers as part of the system's so-called "excessing" process, which District schools follow each year as school budgets and enrollments change.

The deadline for new placement is Aug. 15. After that, teachers with high performance ratings have a choice of a $25,000 buyout or a "grace year" to be reassigned to another school. Teachers with lower ratings are at risk of being fired.

Administrators say they expect more than 60 percent of the teachers to find new placement, which means approximately 133 public school teachers in the District are expected to lose their jobs.
