Montgomery County School Board Considers Superintendent's Future

The Montgomery County School Board could decide Tuesday whether to renew Superintendent Dr. Joshua Starr’s contract.

The deadline for Starr to tell the school board if he plans to reapply for his job overseeing the education of more than 150,000 passed Sunday, and the board hasn’t heard from him.

"I'm not sure what to make of that,” board member Michael Durso said.

He was scheduled to appear with a panel Monday to brief the county council on the new plan to protect students from child abuse and neglect but let others attend and answer questions instead.

Opponents of Starr say he has not done enough to close the education gap between white and minority students

The school board will meet Tuesday in a closed door session to receive legal advice about the superintendent's contract and then vote on his future.

Five of the eight members of the board must vote for Starr in order for him to remain.
