It can only be described as a horrible discovery after a horrible death.
Police said Carroll Humphries was walking through traffic, trying to cross busy Centreville Road in Manassas, Va., when he was hit by a Toyota Corolla in the northbound lanes and was knocked to the ground.
The driver of the Corolla stopped.
But before help could arrive, Humphries, 39, was run over by another vehicle, a Nissan Quest minivan, and got caught up in the undercarriage, police said.
The driver of the Quest drove 2 miles to her home, dragging the victim the whole way.
Police said she didn’t know she had hit the man until she arrived home.
She called police, who found Humphries alive. But he died on the way to the hospital.
The woman has been charged with felony hit and run and reckless driving. Ellen Marie Yach turned herself in Wednesday and was released on a $6,000 bond.
The victim was a homeless man well-known to and well-liked by police.
