Joey Poindexter, 38, Arrested in Gaithersburg Sex Assault

Police believe Poindexter may have targeted young men for the past 10 years

Police believe a man accused in the recent sexual assault of another man in Gaithersburg may have been targeting heterosexual men he met at beer pong tournaments.

Real estate appraiser Joey Poindexter, 38, may have attacked as many as 10 men in the last decade, authorities said Tuesday. So far, three men have stepped forward, claiming to be among Poindexter's victims.

Investigators say they've found pictures of men in various states of consciousness on Poindexter's cellphone and are currently working to identify six of the men found in those photos.

Police began their investigation last month after a man alleged that Poindexter sexually assaulted him after meeting him at Looney's Pub in College Park, Md., during a beer pong tournament Oct. 3.

Police say Poindexter took the man to his home in the 8400 block of Plum Creek Drive, where he lived in a room in the basement for several years.

The victim told police that Poindexterbought him beer, shots and a Long Island Iced Tea during the tournament.

Police brought the man to a hospital for an exam and later tapped a subsequent phone conversation between him and Poindexter. They also recorded a conversation between the two men at a Starbucks during which Poindexter admitted to having sex with the man and that the victim was intoxicated at the time, police said.

Poindexter was arrested and is being held without bond on a sex assault charge.

Authorities say all three men who have stepped forward were attacked in the home on Plum Creek Drive, and all were drunk at the time of the assault and were possibly drugged, police add.

Residents of the area told News4's Melissa Mollet they don't remember seeing anyone but the homeowner at the Plum Creek Drive home.

"It's surprising. This is a wonderful neighborhood," said neighbor Beth Hill. "I can't believe it."

Investigators believe Poindexter is a sexual predator who has been victimizing young adult men for approximately 10 years. They say he frequents beer pong tournaments, attending events at various bars in the D.C. and Baltimore area. He would often take pictures of his victims, police said.

Police say Poindexter also attended events in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Dallas, Virginia Beach and Salt Lake City, and may have preyed upon men he met in those cities as well.

Police say that because of the nature of the assaults, victims may be reluctant to step forward, but they are asking anyone who may have been assaulted to contact them.
