Former Police Officer's Mother Guilty in Fatal Shooting Outside Maryland McDonald's

Authorities say shooting stemmed from child custody dispute

What to Know

  • The shooting was the result of a child custody dispute between a woman and Caroline Conway's son, a former police officer.
  • Conway shot the woman and her new husband with her son's service weapon.
  • The husband died, but the woman and her unborn child survived.

A jury convicted a former Maryland police officer's mother in a double shooting in a McDonald's parking lot that killed a 25-year-old man and injured his pregnant wife, who was involved in a custody dispute with the police officer.

The evening of May 20, 2015, the victims, Robert and Krystal Mange, drove from Virginia to the Rock N Roll McDonald's in Waldorf to pick up her two young children, who had been staying with Caroline Conway, the grandmother of one of the children.

Caroline Conway got into their car and held them at gunpoint with the service weapon of her son, former Prince George's County Police Officer Richard Conway, who had a previous relationship with Krystal Mange. Caroline Conway demanded the victims surrender their cellphones so they couldn't call for help, according to the Charles County State's Attorney's Office.

When Robert Mange reached for the gun, Caroline Conway opened fire, hitting the victims several times as they attempted to flee, the prosecution said.

The Manges were taken to a local hospital where Robert Mange was pronounced dead. Krsytal Mange was critically injured but survived, as did her unborn child.

Officers arrested Caroline Conway at her home after Krystal Mange identified her, the prosecution said.

After a 10-day trial and two days of deliberations, a jury convicted Caroline Conway, 53, of several charges, including murder and attempted murder. She faces four life sentences plus 100 years.
