Flu Activity Wanes in Virginia

Flu is waning in Virginia following 11 weeks of widespread activity.

The latest state figures show the level of flu activity declined from widespread to regional in the last week of February.

Virginia Department of Health epidemiologist Andrea Alvarez tells The Virginian-Pilot that flu activity could increase again. But generally, she says flu activity decreases after it drops out of peak range.

The state has averaged 10 weeks of widespread flu activity during the past five seasons.

Five flu-related child deaths have occurred in Virginia during this season.
