Ex-Alexandria FD Employee Accused of Money Laundering

A former Alexandria Fire Department employee has been accused of taking tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars, according to a grand jury indictment.

Monique Jackson Asante, 38, of Woodbridge, Virginia, is charged with one count of money laundering in connection with her work for the fire department. She started working for the City of Alexandria two decades ago, starting as a secretary and working her way up to a position in the fire department as an administrative analyst, according to her LinkedIn page.

On Feb. 23, the fire department received information that Asante may have mishandled city fund. During the internal investigation, it was discovered that Asante was allegedly sending out fraudulent Invoices to fictitious companies, allegedly headed by her friends.

According to investigators, she and her friends would share the money. Funds adding up to tens of thousands of dollars were reportedly misappropriated.

Asante was fired from her position on Feb. 24.

A release from the city said as a result of the investigation, Alexandria is working to improve its financial controls, increase audit frequency and strengthen approvals processes. The fire department is also providing additional ethics and fiscal management training.
