Fairfax County Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead.

An officer pulled over a green SUV near the intersection of Rt. 1 and Fort Hunt Rd in Alexandria, police said. The driver of that vehicle stopped but then sped off.

The SUV came to a stop after hitting a sedan. That driver was not seriously injured.

At least one shot was fired into the suspect's car, hitting the driver.

"We don't know the circumstances of the traffic stop and the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation," said Officer Bud Walker, a spokesperson for Fairfax County police.

The suspect was taken to Mt. Vernon Hospital where he later died.
