DCPS Athletic Director Stephanie Evans Resigns After Money Management Questions

A top administrator with D.C. Public Schools resigned following questions about her management of money, News4's I-Team reported.

Athletic Director Stephanie Evans has been on paid administrative leave since October, when she returned from maternity leave. Evans' resignation went into effect Tuesday evening.

No money was taken or is missing, but protocol was violated. Two sources with knowledge of the school district's review said there were questions about Evans oversight of department funds.

"To be very clear, there was no money missing, and all funds were accounted for," Evans told News4 in a statement. "It is an overstatement to say I struggled to manage the funds of the department due to an issue with a single account. At the point when the issue occurred, I was handling my position and the vacant position of the person responsible for handling the funds, all while experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. I stand by my four years of positive performance assessments and am very proud of my accomplishments as athletic director of DCPS."

Appointed by former D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray in 2011, Evans was paid about $106,000 a year.

Last month, the school district declined to comment on the case, saying it's a "personnel matter." Reginald Ballard is serving as the interim athletic director.
