Craigslist Robbery Warning in Fairfax County

Phony ads target prospective car buyers

Police are warning about a string of robberies involving phony Craigslist auto ads in Fairfax County.

Two incidents happened in the Newington area near Pohick Road and Wadebrook Terrace. On Sept. 10 and Sept. 27, victims reported being held up by two men. At least one suspect showed a gun, investigators said.

A third case was reported Sept. 25 in the 13300 block of Ivakota Farm Road in Clifton. In that case the victim got away before the suspects got any money, police said.

Fairfax County Police are urging anyone who arranges a meeting to buy something off Craigslist to use caution. They suggest meeting in a public place, during the daytime, and bringing a friend if possible. Police also say if the price sounds “too good to be true,” that’s probably the case.

Anyone who may have information about any of the three robberies so far is asked to contact Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131. You can also remain anonymous by calling Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS.
