. A new law taking aim at people falling off roofs strengthens the city's resume in that regard.

The College Park City Council just passed a law banning lawn furniture on roofs. The big concern was student safety, especially when alcohol is a factor.

The law doesn’t apply to roof furniture that is designed specifically for rooftops, but all that comes to mind there is fancy-schmancy furniture on the roofs of top-dollar high rises.

Not everyone is happy about the new ruling. Many students say they have the right to sit on the roof and do homework or whatever else they please.

Other students say they can see the danger of hanging out on roof tops. With good weather on the way, some students can imagine people falling off the roof while partying.

Violators now face a $200 fine. Anyone caught after that first offense gets slapped with a $400 charge each consecutive week the furniture is not taken down.

Councilman Marcus Alzali said the law was necessary.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone gets injured up there,” he said. “We thought we had to do something to curtail that behavior."
