Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Kayaker

New Year's Day sunrise taken from the Potomac River, near Maryland Point light.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for a 23-year-old man about 1:30 p.m. Thursday after his kayak was found overturned on the Potomac River.

A friend reported Jeryll Dickerson missing Wednesday, officials said.

The friend told authorities that they left Coles Point Marina in Virginia for Tall Timbers Marina on the Maryland side of the river, where they planned to eat breakfast, but turned back after 30 minutes. The friend went on alone to get a motorboat to help bring Dickerson to shore, but lost sight of him after returning with the boat.

Police in Westmoreland County, Virginia, spotted an overturned kayak on the shore.
