Thanksgiving is next week and one major turkey distributor - Butterball - says it's experiencing a turkey shortage.
Butterball told News4 it has a limited supply of fresh, whole turkeys 16 pounds or greater.
Butterball blames the shortage on a problem with turkey weight gains on some of its farms.
Butterball told News4 it does, however, have plenty of frozen, whole turkeys of all sizes, and it fulfilled 100 percent of its frozen orders.
The company said it sincerely regrets the inconvenience.
Butterball expects to completely fulfill all customer orders of fresh, whole turkeys for Christmas.
News4 checked with Giant and Safeway today to see if the Butterball shortage would affect the D.C. Metro area.
Giant said it expects to meet demand because it ordered fresh whole turkeys well in advance and it secured an additional turkey supplier to be safe.
Safeway said it ordered plenty of fresh turkeys from other suppliers because it knew of the Butterball problem.
