Broken Water Main Floods Veirs Mill Road in Silver Spring

A water main broken since Thursday is continuing to flood Veirs Mill Road in Silver Spring early Friday, and due to the morning's frigid weather, some of that water is turning into slush.

The 24-inch main broke around noon Thursday. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said crews have been working to repair it since then. They have been digging to get to the pipe; however, they've been having trouble with valves not working properly.

In the meantime, the water main is continuing to pour water into the westbound lanes of Veirs Mill Road, near intersection with Connecticut Avenue. The two left lanes are closed; one lane is getting by to the right.

Drivers are urged to be cautious.

The pipe that broke is 67 years old.
