50 Vehicles Crash in Four Accidents on I-77

Two killed and 20 injured in foggy driving conditions

Up to 50 vehicles were involved in a series of crashes on Interstate 77 in Virginia on Tuesday. Two people were killed and 20 more were injured -- four critically.

Virginia State Police said visibility was reduced to zero in the area of the accidents near Wytheville in Carroll County.

Rescue worker reported cars were stacked on top of one another and tractor-trailers jackknifed or turned on their sides. Many of the vehicles involved were commercial.

The foggy conditions in the Fancy Gap area made that section of the interstate dangerous throughout the day. The first accident happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. Two more wrecks came on the heels of the first one just minutes later.

Then in the afternoon, an accident in the northbound lane involving at least two tractor-trailers shut down traffic to the North Carolina line. Traffic was detoured as rescue crews cleared the roadway of crashed vehicles and debris.
