More Than 15,000 Local Workers Lost Jobs in 2009

Last year was a bad one for thousands of workers in the nation's capital. The D.C. area, including Arlington and Alexandria, lost 15,700 jobs in 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The unemployment rate at the end of the year was 6.2 percent.
While a bunch of Washingtonians lost their jobs, workers elsewhere had it even worse. Chicago (down 182,300 jobs) suffered the most job losses last year.
Other cities with six-figure declines:
- Los Angeles (down 164,200 jobs)
- New York City (down 150,400)
- Detroit (down 114,500)
- Atlanta (down 105,300)
