1 Dead, 1 Badly Injured in Gaithersburg Crash

Officer attempted to stop SUV prior to the crash, but the driver sped up and ran a red light, authorities said

A man died and a woman sustained life-threatening injuries in an early-morning car accident Thursday in Gaithersburg.

The deceased was identified as local musician Shayne Johnson.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after he was being ejected from his vehicle.

Authorities say that shortly before the crash, around 1:30 a.m., a Montgomery County police officer saw an SUV approaching without dimming its high-beam headlights. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped up and ran a red light while turning left, authorities said.

The officer then began searching for the SUV, and found it overturned in the 500 block E. Diamond Avenue.

Authorities say it appears the SUV struck a utility pole, a bus stop, a tree, a fire hydrant and a pole support cable before overturning.

Both Johnson and his female passenger were ejected from the vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital.

Johnson's family says he was a well known artist who performed at Ibiza nightclub last year.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
