A Virginia woman who worked for American University’s law school has pleaded guilty to breaking the law. Prosecutors say she stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the school.
Martine Tavakoli, 49, of McLean, Va., has worked for the university since 1981.
In 1998, she was put in charge of law journals. That’s when prosecutors said she began taking checks made out to AU law journals and pocketed $400,000.
They said she would take the money and deposit it into a secret bank account. She would then use it to pay for her rent, credit card debt and all of her living expenses.
Tavakoli is scheduled to be sentenced in September, and she also agreed to pay the money back.
