Power Returning After Storm

Power slowly coming back after Saturday storm

Power has been mostly restored across the region after the first "winter" storm of 2011-12 drove northeast across Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia Saturday.

As of 2:30 p.m. Sunday, PEPCO was reporting 57 customers without power, compared to 1,110 who were in the dark at around 6 p.m. Saturday night.

Dominion Power reported 5,466 customers without power, but only 247 of those were located in the Shenandoah and Western Piedmont region of Virginia, an area which bore the brunt of the storm.

Baltimore Gas and Electric reported that restoration resulting from the storm had been completed, but Alleghany Power Company reported 1,621 customers without power in Hagerstown, 363 without power in Cumberland, and 145 without power in Frederick. In addition, the Associated Press reported Sunday afternoon that 11,000 Potomac Edison customers were without power, including about 6,600 in Washington County.

A Potomac Edison spokesperson told the AP that it could be Wednesday before power is completely restored to the company's customers in western Maryland.

By the time the National Weather Service's winter storm warning expired at 6 p.m. Saturday, between 4 and 8 inches of snow had fallen in western areas of Virginia and Maryland as well as in eastern West Virginia, with up to 10 inches falling in elevated areas.

The nasty weather primarily came to earth in the form of rain across the District of Columbia, though about an inch of snow fell in the northern and western parts of the city between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Though there were no reports of any significant vehicle accidents resulting from the weather, D.C. authorities have urged caution while driving on the 11th Street Bridge and along Interstate 295 at Howard Road, Southeast due to the possible presence of black ice.

In Arlington, the southbound side of Glebe Road is closed beginning at Old Dominion Drive due to black ice.
