With Natasha Cloud and LaToya Sanders announcing their intent to opt-out for the 2020 season, the Washington Mystics have signed a 12-veteran Essence Carson to help fill out the roster.
Carson joins the Mystics as one of the most experienced players in the WNBA. Throughout her career, the guard/forward has played in 346 games, across three teams and won a WNBA championship in 2016.
"We are excited to add Essence to our team," head coach and general manager Mike Thibault said. "Her ability to play several positions and her veteran leadership will be a great addition. Above all, she's a proven winner."
Last season, Carson played with the Phoenix Mercury where she suited up in 23 games and had 13 starts. In those outings, she averaged 5.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. She missed 11 games in that campaign battling a calf injury.

In all 12 seasons, the 6-foot wing has played in significant roles for each team. Back in 2011, she was named an All-Star for the lone time in her career. Her best play was prior to an ACL tear back in 2013. Of her 12 seasons, nine have resulted in postseason appearances.
Carson will be a key piece in the rotation in Washington without Cloud and Sanders. She likely will serve in a huge role on the second-unit will the ability to spot-start on occasion.
Most notably, she is able to play multiple positions on the court which Thibault has noted is going to be a key makeup of the roster going forward.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed as is the team's policy.
