Amazon becomes latest retailer to stop selling DC football team merchandise

Amazon is the latest online retailer to announce that it will no longer sell D.C. football team-related merchandise on its site, a spokesperson confirmed to CNBC.

"With the announcement from the Washington team and the NFL, we are removing products with the team's name and logo from our stores," a notice from the company said. "Failure to properly close or delete all restricted product listings from your inventory may result in deactivation."

The online retail giant is not the first company to make a change in its policy regarding team gear as many call for the team's name to be changed. Nike, along with Target and Walmart, has removed all items from their inventory. It's a move that begun quickly after Nike, PepsiCo and FedEx received letters from investors requesting the companies to cut ties with Washington unless the team changed its name.

FedEx, which holds the naming rights to the team's stadium, has since responded saying "We have communicated to the team in Washington our request that they change the team name." FedEx President and CEO Frederick Smith owns a minority stake in the team.

While many sites are letting go of team products, others will continue to sell them. Namely, Fanatics and NFL.com's shop stated that gear will still be available for purchase.

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos is a name that has already popped up when it comes to potential new owners in Washington. Smith, Robert Rothman and Dwight Schar are trying to sell their stake in the team. The three make up 40% of the ownership. Bezos looks to be a solid fit not only because he has the money to do so, but for multiple other reasons as well.

Amazon will soon have a new headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, meaning Bezos will have a closer connection to the DMV. Additionally, partnering with Amazon could provide any team -- or the league itself -- with the ability to launch some type of streaming platform in the near future. However, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio explained that Bezos could be looking to buy 100% of a team, something Dan Snyder may not be open to.

For now, there are still many unknowns when it comes to the future ownership of the team. As far as a connection with Amazon, the only one that exists at this moment relates to the service no longer selling Washington gear.
