McDonnell to Step Into National Spotlight

"He is an impressive public servant": Sen. Mitch McConnell

Newly inaugurated Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell will be stepping into the national spotlight next Wednesday.

McDonnell has been chosen to deliver the Republican Address to the Nation, immediately following President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address on Jan. 27.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced the selection Thursday, with McConnell saying that McDonnell was the GOP's pick because "he is an impressive public servant and an excellent choice to offer Republican solutions for our country."

In a statement, Boehner added that they also chose McDonnell because of he "has offered common-sense economic policies in stark contrast to Washington Democrats' job-killing agenda."

McDonnell was sworn in a Virginia's governor last weekend. He won the Democratic-held governorship last fall, one of two major GOP victories. Republicans also unseated a Democrat in New Jersey.
