Ward 3 Residents Protest DC Mayor's Homeless Shelter Plan

Dozens turned out to protest D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's $660 million homeless shelter plan Tuesday night.

Residents in Ward 3 said they only received four days of notice of the meeting. Some believe it was a deliberate attempt to prevent meaningful community engagement.

Bowser wants to close the D.C. General homeless shelter and open new sites in each of the District's eight wards.

Opponents have argued some of the sites violate zoning laws and are in unsafe areas.

Three meetings will be held in three wards over the next few days. They will be held at the following times and locations:

  • Ward 5: Thursday, April 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.,.; Mount Horeb Baptist Church, 2914 Bladensburg Road NE
  • Ward 6: Wednesday, April 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Metropolitan Police Department First District Headquarters; 101 M St. SW
  • Ward 7: Wednesday, April 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; H.D. Woodson Senior High School, 540 55th St. NE
