National Portrait Museum Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

The National Portrait Museum will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of programs that highlight Hispanic artists and their contributions to American history.

National Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off on Sept. 15 and runs through Oct. 15, according to hispanicheritagemonth.gov.

The month-long celebration includes a Family Day event on Sept. 30, which will feature live music, curator talks and art activities. On Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month, visitors can listen to stories and create art inspired by prominent Latinos and Latinas.

The Portrait Gallery currently has five exhibits in both English and Spanish. The museum plans to become fully bilingual by 2018.

As part of this celebration of Latino cultures, traditions and stories, the museum will also showcase 26 portraits by Latino artists or of Latino sitters. These include works by and of Frida Kahlo, Mairsol Escobar, Pedro Martínez, Chita Rivera, Clemente Soto Vélez and Piri Thomas.

The National Portrait Gallery is free of charge for all visitors.
