Metro Worker Falls 35 Feet Down Shaft in Bethesda

A Metro worker was seriously injured after he fell 35 feet down a shaft near the Bethesda Metro station, Montgomery County fire officials say.

The worker fell into a utility shaft along Wisconsin Avenue at about 1:30 a.m., Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire Department, said on Twitter.

"There's a platform and some access areas, and this worker fell about 35 feet below grade," Piringer said.

Firefighters pulled the worker out of the shaft after about 90 minutes.

Piringer said the man suffered injuries to his legs, back and was also suffering from hypothermia.
