Man Indicted in Killing, Violent Home Invasions

Garcia-Perlera faces host of charges

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- A Montgomery County grand jury has indicted a man charged in the killing of a Bethesda woman during a string of violent home invasion robberies that targeted the elderly.

Jose Garcia-Perlera, 33, faces one count of murder, four counts of robbery, four counts of false imprisonment and other charges, according to court documents.

Police allege that Garcia-Perlera is responsible for at least five home invasions that took place since a little more than a year ago. Authorities said Garcia-Perlera broke into the homes of elderly residents from Potomac to Chevy Chase and bound the occupants. They said they also believe he killed 63-year-old Mary Havenstein at her Bethesda home on Sept. 4.
