Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash in Anne Arundel County

A Maryland man died in a motorcycle crash early Monday in Anne Arundel County.

Officers responded to the crash scene on Southern Maryland Boulevard and Talbot Road about 5 a.m.

Police said a Dodge truck was pulling a box trailer northbound on Southern Maryland Boulevard toward Talbot Road when the rider of a motorcycle approached from behind and tried to switch lanes, according to a release from the Anne Arundel County Police Department. The motorcycle rider struck the back of trailer and lost control, causing the motorcycle to run off the side of the road and strike a tree, police said. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle and struck a utility pole, police said.

The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified him as Christopher Doran Whisman, Jr., 33, of Broomes Island, Maryland.

The driver of the truck remained on the scene. He was not injured.

The primary cause of the crash was an unsafe lane change by the motorcycle rider, police said, according to a preliminary investigation. It does not appear that speed was a factor in the crash, police said.
