Canadian Gold Coin Donated in Salvation Army's Red Kettle

The Salvation Army Montgomery County discovered a holiday surprise inside one of its famous red buckets.

Capt. Karl Dahlin found a solid gold coin among the donations in a bucket outside Giant Food in Cabin John, Maryland, Saturday. The coin was a Canadian collector’s coin with a face value of CAN$50 but could be worth as much as US$1,200.

It is unknown who donated the coin. Funds raised from the sale of the coin will help with donations this year, which are down almost 15 percent.

The Salvation Army said money raised through the annual Red Kettle Campaign helps struggling families and individuals in Montgomery County through a variety of services and programs.
