Arlington Presented with 2012 Cultural Diversity Award

The National League of Cities recognizes Arlington's Multicultural Outreach Program

The National League of Cities (NLC) chose Arlington County to receive its 2012 Cultural Diversity Award. Arlington won first place in its population category for its Multicultural Outreach Program.

Sponsored by the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials of the National League of Cities, the City Cultural Diversity Awards was created to “showcase examples of how cities achieve excellence in diversity”. The program is designed to encourage residents to participate in local government sponsored activities and to enhance and show the appreciation of cultural diversity as a way of life in our communities.

Arlington is a trailblazer for diversity. Its’ outreach program extends throughout all County departments and ensures all residents of all backgrounds have access to all community services and educational programs offered.

Some of Arlington’s newest Spanish-speaking residents have access to a comprehensive Spanish language website, citizenship classes and workshops through the Department of Human Services. The Arlington Education and Employment program offers English classes and the Arlington Employment Center offers job readiness training.

“This award is truly an honor,” said County Board Chair Mary Hynes. “It recognizes the hard work Arlington--the board, manager and every department-- does to ensure that our community is diverse and welcoming. Our Multicultural Outreach Program, which reaches across all County departments, helps residents of all backgrounds connect with the services they need, and helps build community.”

The National league of Cities National Black Caucus of Elected Officials established the awards program in 1995 to promote diversity through local government sponsored programs with participating residents of the community. Winning cities are selected from a pool of applicants and are grouped according to population.
