National Park Service Prepares for Moving Million Blossom-Goers

WASHINGTON -- The National Park Service is planning to welcome a million people to the Tidal Basin for the Cherry Blossom Festival, which kicks off Saturday.

The blossoms are expected to be in peak bloom in a few days, just in time for the festival, which lasts three weeks.

Planners are thinking about crowd control.

"There's an equal number of cherry trees on Hains Point as there are on the Tidal Basin, so one of the visitors services that is being provided this year again is that tour mobile will provide a free shuttle service from the Jefferson Memorial, on East Basin Drive, and it's a free shuttle on to Hains Point," said National Park Service spokesman Bill Line.

The shuttle is supposed to ease some of the congestion on the Tidal Basin.
