Son Arrested in Stabbing of Mother Had History of Domestic Violence: Court Documents

Jaclyn McGuigan was a breast cancer survivor remembered fondly by loved ones

A 21-year-old man charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his mother outside a Rockville, Maryland, Catholic church had a history of domestic violence, court documents reveal.

Jaclyn McGuigan, of Marwood Court in Rockville, was seen leaving her home with her son, Kevin Justin McGuigan, Friday night. Thirty minutes later, police were responding to reports of a deadly assault at Saint Raphael Church, police say. The 49-year-old mother appears to have been stabbed.

When police knocked on the door to notify Jaclyn's family, court documents say that Kevin's brother immediately asked if he had killed their mother.

The brother also told police that two years ago, Kevin tried to strangle him. He never reported the attack to police.

In February 2016, Jaclyn was granted a no-contact order against Kevin, State's Attorney spokesperson Ramon Korionoff said. Court documents show Kevin was ordered to surrender weapons and move out.

Under Montgomery County law, protective orders remain in effect for up to one year and can be extended for up to six months.

Kevin moved out of his mother's home on Marwood Court and was living in the Grosvenor area of Rockville at the time of the killing, police documents show.

The suspect's sister told police that Kevin called Jaclyn early on Friday and asked to meet. She saw them driving off in a Honda Accord about 5:30 p.m., but didn't know where they were going.

Shortly before 6 p.m., two witnesses heard screaming in front of St. Raphael's Catholic Church on Dunster Road in Rockville. They went toward the noise and saw someone matching Kevin's description standing over his mother.

Jaclyn was bleeding from a cutting-type wound on her neck, court documents say. One witness attempted CPR until first responders arrived. Jaclyn died outside the church, police say.

Police didn't detail a motive in the killing and it's unclear why the two went to the church.

Jaclyn appeared to be killed with a cutting instrument, according to police. Kevin's sister told police that he often carried a folding knife.

Police said Kevin fled the scene in the Honda sedan, which is registered to his mother. Police found the abandoned Honda at Fallsgrove Park less than an hour later. Police say called Kevin's phone number and a device in the car started ringing. The phone appeared to be covered in blood, court documents say.

Police arrested her son, Kevin Justin McGuigan, about 7 a.m. Saturday in Rockville at a gas station. He is charged with first-degree murder.

Jaclyn was a breast cancer survivor remembered fondly by loved ones.

Kevin appeared in court on Monday and was ordered held for a psychiatric review.
