Ellicott City Man Arrested for Damaging Speed Camera Van

A Maryland man is charged with damaging a speed camera van and endangering the van's operator, Howard County Police said Friday.

Abraham Naveed Quraishi, 20, of Ellicott City, is charged with second-degree assault and malicious destruction of property.

Police say an unknown object struck a speed camera van and broke the left rear window Dec. 11 near Hollified Station Elementary School in Ellicott City. The speed camera operator was inside the van at the time and photographed a 2008 Toyota Corolla.

Investigators say the vehicle driven by Quraishi had been cited for speed and red light camera violations.

Police later found the car at Quraishi's home. He turned himself Wednesday and was released on a $5,000 bond.

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about the speed camera program, but we cannot overlook the significant damage to equipment and potential injury to our van operators," said Police Chief Gary Gardner in a release.

This is the fourth arrest involving destruction of speed camera equipment since the enforcement program was launched in school zones around Howard County in 2011.
