The woman who died as the result of a house fire in Cheverly Sunday morning has been identified.
Authorities said Stephanie Kay Syslo, 59, died in the fire that broke out at around 8 a.m. in the two-story, single-family home in the 2400 block of 59th Place. According to News4's Derrick Ward, the fire was first spotted by a four-year-old who lived across the street.
Authorities said the fire started in a second-floor bedroom and extended through the attic and the roof before it was extinguished. The cause of the fire is not yet determined, but investigators say they have no reason to believe it was anything but accidental.
There was a smoke detector in the home, but it didn't have a battery in it.
A Prince George's County firefighter suffered a small second-degree burn to his hand and was taken to a local hospital.
Neighbors said that the woman worked for the Environmental Protection Agency and was an avid gardner and "Star Trek" fan who held parties for fellow fans in her home. Investigators said that hoarding conditions appeared to be prevalent in the home, though they did not specify any further.
