Teacher Accused of Raping Woman He Promised to Teach

A teacher at a D.C. elementary school is facing charges of rape and sexual assault after police say he attacked a woman whom he promised to teach.

The woman was found unconscious in the bushes outside of a Wendy's restaurant in Montgomery County, Maryland, on Oct. 9, a court document says.

Rudy A. Gonzalez, 47, a longtime music teacher at Shepherd Elementary School, is now on administrative leave.

The woman told police she and Gonzalez knew each other. According to Montgomery County court documents, on Oct. 8, Gonzalez picked her up from the Westfield Wheaton mall and brought her to his home in Silver Spring so he could teach her English and help her get her citizenship, she told police. The woman said he served her unidentified drinks; according to court documents, he told police the two drank tequila.

The woman told Montgomery County Police that she passed out and woke up about 7 a.m. the next day in Gonzalez' bed, naked, in intense pain and disoriented. Gonzalez dropped off the woman near a Wendy's near the mall.

An employee later found her outside, unconscious.

The woman was transported to a hospital, where she underwent a sexual assault forensic exam and then had surgery for her injuries, which included severe internal injuries, court documents said. She also had visible bruising to her body, the documents said.

Gonzalez told police what happened was consensual and that he could tell the woman was intoxicated. He denied any knowledge of the woman's injuries but said she did not have any injuries before she was with him.

Gonzalez is charged with second-degree rape, first- and second-degree assault and third-degree sex offense. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next month.
