Chef's New Venture to Be “14th Street Village”

Barton Seaver wants to honor food stamps too

Restaurateur, chef and sustainable seafood advocate Barton Seaver has a fresh idea for D.C.'s Logan Circle: the Diamond District Seafood Co.

It's a combo restaurant and seafood market that he hopes to open by year's end at 1608 14th St. N.W., Metrocurean notes.  Seaver plans to have something for everyone, selection and price-wise, creating a veritable "14th Street Village" in the process. 

Seaver told The Washington Business Journal that he "wants to honor food stamps and offer several species at prices ranging from $3 to $4 a pound so all residents of the transitional neighborhood can afford the market." 

"We’re not selling a luxury product,” Seaver said. “We’re selling a fantastic product."

The restaurant, which will be designed by D.C. architecture and design company Core, will have a menu with an extensive raw bar, a variety of mussel offerings and sustainable fish species, such as bluefish, sablefish and wahoo, WBJ reports.

Its adjoining market, meanwhile, will offer the same fish species served in the restaurant, along with pestos, flavored butters, market produce, olive oils and wines.

Neighbors can even join in the community vibe by becoming partners in the venture and receiving a fixed return, as well as perks such as dining credits, according to the Journal.

And if you don't want to eat there, you can make it yourself.  Barton, who grew up in Mount Pleasant and loves "the versatility of seafood," told the Journal he will provide recipe cards and videos to show would-be cooks how to prepare some of the food he makes.  Now that's something we all can live by.
