John Mayer may have a variety show in the works with CBS, but before he gets to entertain adults, he’ll be educating children by fronting a “Sesame Street” primetime special, alongside Queen Latifah.
“Coming Home: Military Families Cope With Change,” will find the rocker pairing up with the Queen and “Sesame Street” favorite Elmo.
The special will tell stories of military personnel returning home to their families “with injuries, visible and invisible,” the children’s program announced on Wednesday.
The 30-minute special, which will air April 1, 2009, on PBS, will examine the struggles families face in finding what the show has dubbed, a “new normal.”

“The men and women of our military have made indescribable sacrifices,” David Letterman, whose production company Worldwide Pants is producing the show in association with Sesame Workshop, said in a statement. “The very least we can do is tell their stories, and to honor the bravery and strength of both the soldiers and their families.”
