Man in Custody After Trying to Ram Capitol Police Cruiser

WASHINGTON — A man is in custody after apparently attempting to strike a Capitol Police cruiser and run over other officers sparking a heavy police response near the U.S. Botanical Gardens, police said.

D.C. police said they received a call about 9:30 a.m. about the incident near 100 block of Independence Avenue.

At some point, an officer fired their weapon but no one was struck, police said.

D.C. police told WTOP the man was apprehended at 3rd and Independence Avenue in Southeast D.C.

The incident sparked a heavy police presence and closed Independence Avenue between Washington Avenue SW and First Street SE.
