Trial Begins for 6 in Slaying of Va. Reserve Officer Kevin Quick

Six people are scheduled to go on trial in Virginia this week on charges stemming from the slaying of a reserve police officer.

The trial resolves around the slaying of 45-year-old Kevin Quick, a 25-year veteran of the volunteer reserve police force in Waynesboro. Quick, 45, was reported missing after he failed to arrive at a friend's house for a surprise party the night of Jan. 31, 2014. His body was found a few days later in a remote part of Virginia.

Four defendants, including three siblings, are charged with kidnapping, murder, racketeering and robbery in the case: Travis Bell and siblings Daniel Lamont Mathis, Shantai Monique Shelton and Mersadies Lachelle Shelton.

Gert Arthur Wright III, also known as Halisi Uhuru, and Anthony Darnell Stokes are charged with racketeering and obstruction of justice.

Jury selection will begin Monday in U.S. District Court in Charlottesville. The trial is expected to last four weeks, The News-Virginian reports.

Quick has been remembered as a dedicated, unflappable officer and a "kind and gentle" man with a ready smile. He had a 4-month-old daughter.
